We are pleased to announce capital grants of £7.8m million for scientific infrastructure projects and secondary schools across the UK.
For our most recent funding round, we divided our funds between capital projects for mainstream educational organisations and a Covid-19 Support Fund for all other areas. Total funding was over £17.5 million and further information on the Covid-19 Support Fund was announced in December.
Among other research areas, projects supported included research into Covid-19, with £1 million to help establish a new Centre for Epidemic Preparedness and Response at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and £750,000 for the University of Bristol’s Infectious Diseases Laboratory Suite.
We also recognise that other crucial areas of research also need to be supported despite the devastating impact of the ongoing pandemic.
We have also awarded University College London Hospitals Charity £1 million for research facilities in a new specialist cancer hospital.
It is a particularly important time to be supporting schools, given the challenges that they are currently facing. Over £1.3 million has been awarded to 20 schools to improve teaching and learning facilities for STEM subjects and the creative arts, including £150,000 for refurbishment of the musical theatre facilities at the BRIT School, whose alumni include singer-songwriters Adele and the late Amy Winehouse.
