Application Guidance

We have a two stage application process. The first application should be made online and is designed to be short and easy to complete. If this application is successful, we ask for a more detailed second application.

In order to help you, we have created a list of our Funding FAQs

Stage 1 applications

Please ensure you have read our apply for funding section and eligibility criteria and Funding FAQs before filling in the Stage 1 application.

Stage 2 applications

Submission of a Stage 2 application is by invitation only.

There are different requirements and deadlines for different programmes. Your invitation email will detail which programme to apply under and the contact details for your Programme Manager.

Unless otherwise agreed, we require that at least 50% of the capital costs of the project are raised before submission (unless the project cost is under £50,000). Matching funds may include funds raised towards elements of the capital project that are not eligible for Wolfson funding (e.g. VAT and professional fees). They should not be for funds raised towards staff costs or core funding. Unless otherwise agreed, we also require that any necessary planning permission is in place. If permission has not been formally received but is likely to be imminent, please contact your Programme Manager for advice.

How to apply: Stage 2

Stage 2 applications should be submitted via our online application system. Applications should contain the information requested in our Stage 2 Application Guidelines documents.

When to apply: Stage 2

We run two funding rounds each year. The key dates are:

  • Round 1 Stage 2 application deadline: 1 March, Funding decision: June
  • Round 2 Stage 2 application deadlines: 1 September, Funding decision: December

Grants are not made retrospectively, and so your project must be ongoing at the time that a funding decision is made (i.e. June or December).

Unless otherwise agreed, invitations to Stage 2 remain open for three funding rounds. If your Stage 1 application is successful, your invitation will specify the latest round in which you can submit a Stage 2 application.

Review and assessment process
Stage 2 applications are sent out to expert reviewers and you can find out more about our application review process here.

If questions or queries are raised, applicants are given an opportunity to respond. Applications are then considered by an expert Panel, who make recommendations to our Trustees.

Before applying

Depending on the size of your project, we may require some match funding in place before submission. Where the total cost of the project is above £1million, 50% match funding is required; if the total project cost is between £50,000 and £1million, some match funds are required; and if the total project cost is below £50,000, no match funding is required. Matching funds may include funds raised towards elements of the capital project that are not eligible for Wolfson funding (e.g. VAT and professional fees). They should not be for funds raised towards staff costs or core funding. If additional funding will be required to deliver the project but is not yet secured, a clear fundraising strategy should be in place for raising the balance.

Unless otherwise agreed, we require that any necessary planning permission is in place. If permission has not been formally received but is likely to be imminent, please contact your Programme Manager for advice.
