Mental Health Initiative
In 2019 £10 million was awarded to support high quality research in mental health. This special initiative was launched as a direct response to the increase in rates of mental health problems, particularly among young people. It also recognised that mental health research has traditionally been underfunded in the UK and, throughout the process, we worked closely with other funders.
The funding will create the Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health in Wales, to be based at Cardiff University but involving a consortium of partner organisations across Wales. Researchers will seek to understand how and why adolescent depression develops, and how best to prevent and treat it. The research, although focused on Wales, will draw on international best practice and includes plans for ambitious international recruitment.
