The Wolfson Foundation is one of the UK’s largest funding charities, awarding grants to support excellence in the fields of science and medicine, health & disability, education and the arts & humanities (see www.wolfson.org.uk). The Foundation manages an endowment of some £800 million and allocates over £30 million each year in grants across a range of funding programmes.

The Foundation’s schools programme supports high-achieving state-funded secondary schools and sixth form colleges to improve the teaching of science, computer science, design & technology, art, languages, music and performing arts at GCSE and A-Level. The programme has a dedicated focus on supporting capital infrastructure and equipment projects and there is currently an annual budget of £2.5 million allocated to it.

Our decision-making is rigorous, with funding being provided on the basis of expert peer review. We are looking to appoint a small number of freelance assessors based around the UK to support this process; to review funding applications and provide written reports to advise our Schools Panel. Assessors are expected to be currently working in or have immediate experience as a senior leader working in secondary education. Previous experience of working with funding organisations is not required but may be beneficial. We are particularly keen to appoint assessors with current knowledge of the education systems in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and who are willing to undertake assessments of schools based in these locations.

Our funding programme runs twice a year and the majority of work will need to be undertaken during March-April and August-September. We may occasionally request advice outside of these months to inform our policy decisions. We expect the majority of assessments to be document-based only but visits to schools may be required on occasion. Assessors will only be expected to undertake a small number of assessments each round (up to five) and the actual number will vary depending on the number of applications received. Assessors will be paid £200 for each completed assessment.

To apply please send a CV and cover letter outlining any relevant experience and also specifying which region(s) of the UK you would be interested in assessing for (these match the regions used by Ofsted, plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Your CV and letter should be emailed to jobs@wolfson.org.uk by 10am on Monday 30 September 2019. We are likely to be in contact to ask for a meeting or telephone conversation as part of the selection process. Successful applicants will be contacted by Monday 14 October 2019.

For queries in advance of applying, please direct these to Lin Richardson, Deputy Chief Executive via the email address given.
