History PrizeThe Wolfson History Prizes, which were established in 1972, are awarded annually to promote and encourage standards of excellence in the writing of history for the general public. Prizes are given annually, usually for two exceptional works published during the year, with an occasional oeuvre prize (a general award for an individual's distinguished contribution to the writing of history). In order to qualify for consideration, a book must be published in the United Kingdom within the current calendar year. The author must be a British subject at the time the award is made and normally resident in the UK. Books should be scholarly but accessible to the lay reader. Books are selected for consideration by the judges. Any suggestions to the judges should come via the publisher and be addressed to the Prize Administrator at the Wolfson Foundation (for our postal address click here). Suggestions should be detailed in a letter and accompanied by catalogues listing the books in question. Please do not send any books unless requested to do so by the Prize Administrator. The prize winners of a given year are announced in the summer of the following year. The judges do not release a short list. The judges are Sir Keith Thomas FBA (Chairman), Dame Averil Cameron DBE FBA, Professor Richard Evans FBA and Sir David Cannadine FBA. A list of previous prize winners is available here. |
