Special Needs: previous case study
In December 2008, Trustees awarded £75,000 towards the refurbishment and extension of Crawford House, a 'Home from Home' at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for families with children receiving treatment at the hospital. Since opening in 1996, Crawford House has supported approximately 800 families each year, offering its rooms free of charge to families in need. It maintains itself solely through voluntary donations raised by the Sick Children's Trust.
The Sick Children's Trust provides seven 'Homes from Home' throughout the UK, and Acorn House at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge also received a grant of £50,000 in 2005 towards the purchase of furniture and fittings. These grants are examples of Wolfson funding to support people with a range of special needs. This is primarily through the provision of buildings or equipment for charities that offer excellent support to people with particular health needs or disabilities, and their families.
