Performing Arts: case study
In December 2008, Trustees awarded £50,000 towards work to the Leeds Grand Theatre, home of Opera North. The Wolfson grant was for work to the Assembly Room, to create an exciting education and performance space. Originally opened in 1879 as a performance space, the intervening years were not kind to the Assembly Room, seeing it first converted into a cinema, then suffer fire damage and unsympathetic alterations, before finally a lengthy period of closure. With the help of the Foundation’s grant, the newly named Howard Assembly Room at Opera North has been returned to its Victorian splendour.
This project is an example of the Foundation’s funding of the performing arts, involving the conservation of an important, historic space, and supporting high quality performance.
