Performing Arts
The Wolfson Foundation supports the performing arts through the provision of infrastructure. Funding is usually in the form of refurbishment of buildings as well as, more occasionally, for the construction of new buildings and assistance in the acquisition of specialist equipment.
Funding tends to be focussed on theatres and concert halls housed in buildings of historic significance, or on ballet and opera companies with a national reputation.
Music education is supported through the Wolfson Music Awards. This programme, which has run since the late 1980s, provides scholarships for young (secondary school-age) musicians in the junior departments of musical conservatories - a rare example of non-capital funding. It also funds the purchase of instruments for undergraduates, particularly those with an interest and aptitude for a performing career. Individuals should apply through the relevant conservatoire.
