Historic Buildings and Landscapes: case study
In June 2005, Trustees awarded £200,000 towards the magnificent, romantic ruins of Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire (as part of a joint funding programme with English Heritage). The Wolfson grant was for work to Leicester's Gatehouse, allowing this imposing building to be refurbished and opened to the public for the first time in many years.
The Foundation also funded the recreation of the Elizabethan gardens at Kenilworth (£200,000 in 2003), allowing detailed archaeological research to bring to life some of the fascinating royal history of the site (the gardens originally being created for Queen Elizabeth I's visit in 1575).
Such investments demonstrate the Foundation's interest in both safeguarding and opening up the country's history. Other castles funded in recent years include the Tower of London, Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire and Farnham Castle in Surrey.
