Historic Buildings & Landscapes
An interest in history informs much of the Wolfson Foundation's funding of the arts and humanities, whether through refurbishment of museums, support of academic research or the acquisition and display of works of art.
This interest is also expressed through support for conservation of historic buildings - the physical embodiment of the country's past. From churches to castles, cathedrals to stately homes, the Foundation has contributed to the conservation of many architectural treasures across the country, great and small.
Eligible buildings should normally be listed grade II* or above, and the project should involve conservation or refurbishment work to the historic fabric of the building. The building should be accessible to the public for the majority of the year. Support is also given, on occasion, to landscapes and gardens where these are of exceptional historic significance.
Applications from cathedrals, churches and war memorials are considered through designated programmes.
Grants are also awarded through other partnership programmes, including with the National Trust.
