Grants in Israel: case study
During 2009 and 2010, Trustees of the Wolfson Foundation and Wolfson Family Charitable Trust awarded a combined grant of £347,500 for equipment for solar energy research at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, central Israel.
The equipment supports research into alternative energy sources based on the conversion of solar to electrical energy using photovoltaics. This research could bring international benefit in its aim to reduce the costs of renewable energy, but would be of particular benefit to Israel which is lacking in any indigenous source of fuel.
The grant was part of a nationwide initiative (2009-2010) to support energy research at Israeli universities, co-ordinated by our Advisory Committee in Israel. It is an example of Wolfson funding in Israel: supporting outstanding research across a nationally co-ordinated theme with an important practical relevance.
