Education

Education is one of the Wolfson Foundation's central themes and underpins the majority of projects funded.

An important part of the Foundation's educational activity is the support of secondary schools, primarily for what was the 'maintained' sector (now foundation/voluntary aided/voluntary controlled schools) though not excluding independent schools, sixth form colleges and high performing community schools. More information is available here.

Funding for the higher education sector is also described elsewhere on the website (notably under Scientific & Medical Research). The Foundation has, in addition, smaller programmes for the funding of higher education buildings, particularly for libraries and student accommodation. In 2009 a programme, in partnership with the British Academy, to fund Wolfson Research Professorships was launched. This programme supports outstanding researchers in the arts and social sciences.

A particular focus throughout the Wolfson Foundation's history has been medical education, including the various learned societies supporting the medical profession and intercalated awards for students. Within universities, capital grants have often been made for medical school buildings and medical training facilities. As with all applications from universities, initial approaches should come via the Vice-Chancellor's office (or equivalent) and be a priority for the institution.

In a wider sense, public engagement with science and medicine is an important part of the Foundation's remit. This theme cuts across a number of programmes areas.
