In 2016 the Wolfson Foundation awarded £250,000 towards the restoration and redevelopment of the JORVIK Viking Centre following its devastation by flood the preceding year.

Presenting unique archaeological discoveries unearthed on the site during the 1970s, the transformed JORVIK Viking Centre – which launched in spring 2017 – incorporates the latest interactive technologies and interpretative techniques to tell the story of the Vikings that lived there over 1,000 years ago.

“What was found on this very site changed everyone’s understanding of the Vikings in Britain,” explains Director of Attractions, Sarah Maltby, “and JORVIK shares an incredible depth of knowledge in an accessible way that immerses the visitor in the sights, sounds and of course, smells of the Viking-age city.”
